Katie Biron is a Resource Parent from Seattle, Washington. Katie became interested in this work after entering the foster care system initially with an intent to adopt, she gradually changed her perspective after meeting families navigating the child welfare system and realizing her role was not to "rescue" a child, but instead to come alongside a family in crisis with understanding, support and compassion. Katie is passionate about helping other foster and adoptive families understand their role in supporting families, not hoping a family fails so that they can grow their family. Through Katie’s work with FVU LEAB she has learned the beauty of being in a shared space with others passionate about this work! Katie is an experienced foster and adoptive parent who has been working in the field for over 20 years. Katie has consulted on a number of child welfare related topics at both a state and national level. She has presented her workshop on Building and Nurturing Connections for children and youth experiencing foster care across the U.S.A and internationally.
In addition, Katie has contributed to multiple publications on topics related to parent/caregiver relationships and creating relational permanency for youth in care. In addition to her advocacy and consulting, Katie is passionate about creating more inclusive, authentic, and diverse representation in children's literature, particularly for children in foster and adoptive families. Her book, “The Love Tree,” offers an inclusive alternative that enables children from diverse family backgrounds to celebrate and showcase their families. Katie is the creator of the Family Connections Program™, which builds a network of support for families and young people involved in the child welfare system through peer mentorship. In 2020, a legislative bill establishing the Family Connections Program in Washington state was signed into law (House Bill 2525). Katie also consults on topics related to adoption, including co-designing a program that provides an avenue for adoptive parents to build a lasting community of support as well gently encouraging adoptive parents to support connection with their child’s first family whenever possible. In her spare time, Katie enjoys being crafty, wrangling her 4 kids, gardening, and dreaming of drinking her coffee while it’s still hot.
